In the NSX engine, connecting rods (commonly referred to as piston rods) are a key part of the reciprocating assembly. Their primary role is to link the pistons to the crankshaft, converting the pistons’ linear motion into the rotary motion that drives the vehicle.
Each rod rotates on a crank journal via a pair of rod bearings. These bearings are critical—they manage the high loads and rapid oscillations present at elevated RPMs. Proper oil clearance is essential; too much and you risk a drop in oil pressure and bearing fatigue, too little and you introduce excess friction and heat, which can quickly lead to failure.
NSX rod bearings are plain bearings, not roller-type, and rely entirely on a thin film of pressurized oil to separate the bearing surface from the crankshaft. Because of this, consistent oil pressure and clean lubrication are non-negotiable. Even minor contamination or starvation can cause scoring, wear, or catastrophic failure.
The rods themselves are typically forged from high-strength steel alloy and machined to tight tolerances for weight consistency and balance. While the rods are designed for durability and performance under high-stress conditions, it’s the bearings that often dictate service life under aggressive use.
Maintenance-wise, rod bearings are wear components and should be inspected or replaced at regular intervals, especially in engines subjected to track use or sustained high RPM operation. Signs of bearing wear include knocking noises, reduced oil pressure, and metallic debris in the oil.
In summary, while the rods provide the mechanical link, it’s the rod bearings that quietly absorb the punishment. Their condition directly affects engine longevity, oil pressure stability, and overall performance. Monitoring wear patterns and oil quality is essential for keeping an NSX engine operating reliably at high RPM.
